Program Description: This 2- to 3-day retreat experience encompasses six dynamic courses for men’s personal and leadership development. We are on a mission to talk about the work of men who are courageous leaders, and to discuss the tough topics that leaders face as well as how to create a vision to serve.

(1) Cast a Vision
During this session, we explore the strengths of leaders and cast a vision based on the values and principles of your institution and organization. We will consider our pain and passion points, but more importantly cast a personal vision. This will serve as the base for all of our other work. For instance – do you want to serve as a mentor to sales students, do you want to help fund programs for the homeless, or do you want to serve as a committee member to support the work of the environment? No matter what your personal vision is, it’s important to craft the space and focus on the ideas – with the support of other men.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Build the case for long-term leadership
  • Define areas of pain and passion
  • List the personal dreams that feel impossible
  • Create a plan to make impossible things become inevitable
  • Create a first draft of a leadership vision
  • Practice brainstorming vision ideas
  • Identify personal goals
  • Identify leadership goals
  • Create a leadership vision

(2) Men and Masculinity
It’s time to discuss a critical topic regarding the state of men on college campuses. In this session, we explore the roles and identities of men while talking about the high cost of hyper-masculinity. Finally, we have conversations about how participants can become the men they want to be.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define masculinity
  • Redefine masculinity
  • Identify the fears of college men
  • List who and what influences men
  • Create a healthy man box
  • Identify the cost of hyper-masculinity
  • Choose and list the values of authentic men

(3) Collaboration

During this session, we will learn to be collaborators, even when our mindset craves perfection over partnership. We will discover how to motivate our team, build trust and share our visions with others. Finally, we will uncover why some leaders can’t and won’t pull their own weight, and how to fix that through a collaboration model.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the ways leaders collaborate differently
  • Practice collaboration through Earthquake activity
  • Describe Bruce Tuckman’s model on team performance
  • Describe the pitfalls of solving problems and working independently
  • Identify ways to build trust with your team
  • Determine when it’s time to trust your team with your vision
  • Identify the tips for collaborating
  • Practice validation of other leaders

(4) How to Make Ideas Viral, Sticky and Contagious

In this session, we explore the fascinating work by Jonah Berger. This is a fast-paced course all about marketing great ideas and making great ideas sticky, viral and contagious. Participants will learn the six strategies from Contagious: Why Things Catch On. Each of the six strategies is based on research, but this course is all about how to utilize this research in real life situations. How do you take your vision and make it stick? Instead of guessing if your idea will connect – learn how to be strategic.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the six ways projects and plans are contagious
  • Pitch an idea through a story
  • Build an action plan for delivering your vision

(5) Think Inside the Box
In this session, we discover the phenomenon experts call Analysis Paralysis. It’s that feeling when you are frustrated and even overwhelmed. We will learn how to make the right decision between tough choices that seem to have an equally long list of pros and cons by thinking inside the box. Finally, we will study how to make better plans by narrowing your scope, eliminating pet projects, and making valuable choices as a leader. Most importantly, we will put a plan in place for your leadership visions.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the fears of making wrong decisions
  • Define Analysis Paralysis
  • Identify the toughest choices leaders make
  • List the five strategies for making decisions
  • Identify a matrix for making decisions
  • Apply a matrix for making decisions
  • Identify how to narrow choices
  • Identify the Power of a Good Explanation

(6) Resiliency and Confidence
During this session, we explore the power of resilient and authentically confident people. We will learn how to recreate that astonishing feeling when you are beaming from head to toe, and how to pinpoint that place of authentic confidence on a regular basis. Going beyond just a few moments of accomplishment, how do we feel confident in our decisions and in the way we project ourselves to others? This is a game-changer for leaders and those with a vision to serve.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify tools to build resiliency
  • Describe why confidence is important as a leader
  • Identify confident people
  • Identify characteristics of confident people
  • Identify personal characteristics of confidence
  • Describe the difference between under confidence and over confidence
  • Identify habits that decrease men’s confidence
  • Create a plan to increase confidence

Partner Bio: The mission of the Leadership and Training Studio (LTS) is to support the growth of individuals and teams by giving them time to think, reflect and gain new super-cognitive knowledge.
