Green Dot Student Leadership Training (for campuses currently implementing Green Dot)

Presenting Partner: Green Dot Etcetera

Program Description: An intensive, interactive training designed to increase student leaders’ ability to effectively engage their peers in Green Dot, with a focus on sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking. The training addresses: 1) How to increase enthusiastic participation in violence prevention efforts; 2) How to effectively deliver presentations on violence prevention that are well received and engaging; and 3) How to motivate peers to explore their own role in violence prevention.

Goals: Student leaders will:

  • Be equipped to take concrete steps to create a positive prevention brand on campus that all students can align with.
  • Connect more consciously to the role and responsibility of the bystander.
  • Understand the basic elements of culture change and feel inspired and equipped to mobilize their campus community.
  • Recognize behaviors that may constitute or lead to sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking.
  • Increase intrinsic motivation to intervene in order to reduce harm after violence has started, reduce the likelihood that it will happen again, or reduce the likelihood that it will happen at all.
  • Recognize barriers that may prevent them from doing something in the face of potential interpersonal violence and feel equipped to process barriers with their peers.
  • Develop realistic intervention options given their unique set of barriers and be able to help peers find their own realistic options.
  • Feel equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to proactively engage peers in positive culture change through formal and informal interactions such as presentations, role modeling, use of social media and conversations.

Time: 2-day intensive training

Intended Audience: Students with social influence, student leaders, and peer educators. The ideal group size is 20-50 students.

Partner Bio: Green Dot Etcetera is an organization built on the premise that interpersonal violence can be measurably reduced within any given community. We believe current research across disciplines, in combination with lessons learned from the history of violence prevention efforts and an innovative approach to engaging participants, provide the necessary puzzle pieces to create a successful model for violence prevention. By empowering individuals within communities to harness the power of their collective actions, we believe they can create realistic solutions to the unacceptable rates of violence within our culture.
