September 1, 2009 Four Greeks Chosen for 2009 Texas Sports Hall of Fame Class
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, TX announced it's 2009 induction class and four alumni of NIC member fraternities were selected. They are former AFL co-founder and Houston Oilers owner Bud Adams (Sigma Chi); former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley (Sigma Chi); former major league pitcher Burt Hooton (Kappa Alpha Order); and Cowboys defensive end Harvey Martin (Kappa Alpha Psi).
August 27, 2009 Country Music Artists Cranking Out New CDs
Within the last several months, a number of country singers have released new CDs for their fans, including "Greatest Hits II" by Kenny Chesney (Lambda Chi Alpha) and "To You and Yours", a 32 track "best of" import by George Hamilton IV (Kappa Alpha Order). In the last three weeks, Willie Nelson (Tau Kappa Epsilon) has released two CDs: "Lost Highway" and "American Classic". Other recent new titles in stores are "Big Dreams & High Hopes" by Jack Ingram (Alpha Tau Omega) and "Slide on Over Here" by Steve Azar (Pi Kappa Alpha). Next up are "Revival" on August 31st by Radney Foster (Phi Gamma Delta) and "Doin' My Thing" on October 6th by Luke Bryan (Sigma Chi). Tim McGraw (Pi Kappa Alpha) has also announced a fall release for his newest untitled CD.
August 10, 2009 Greek Featured on Parade Magazine Cover for Second Straight Week
The August 9th edition of Parade featured Brad Pitt on it's cover and a comprehensive inside feature titled "Inside The Private World of Brad Pitt". The University of Missouri Sigma Chi is now starring in the new major film "Inglorious Basterds", which reaches theaters on August 21st. It's a World War II revenge fanatasy about a squad of Jewish-American soldiersin occupied France and he's a squad commander.
August 4, 2009 Panel Ranks Beta Theta Pi's John Wooden as Best Coach Ever
In its current issue, The Sporting News announced results of a panel of 118 distinguised coaches who chose the 50 greatest U.S. coaches from all sports. Topping the list was UCLA basketball coach John Wooden of Beta Theta Pi, who won 10 NCAA titles in a 12-year span. August 3, 2009 Delta Chi's Ashton Kutcher Featured in Parade
The cover story, "I'm Still Looking for Trouble", in Parade magazine's edition on Sunday focused on the growing career of actor Ashton Kutcher. The Delta Chi initiate left the University of Iowa in1997 to get into modeling in New York, before moving to Hollywood for a film and TV career. His next film is entitled "Spread" and he has also become a successful producer at the age of 31.
July 28, 2009 Sigma Chi Big Leaguer Ties Major League Record
Washington Nationals outfielder Josh Willingham, a Sigma Chi from University of North Alabama, became just the 13th major league player to hit two grand slam home runs in the same game. He drove in eight of the team's 14 runs on July 27th versus the Milwaukee Brewers and it was the first time since 2003 that the feat had been accomplished. The only previous Greek to hit two grand slams in a game was Tau Kappa Epsilon's Jim Northrup of the Detroit Tigers on June 24, 1968.
July 27, 2009 Sigma Chi's Ringler Named Football Bowl Game's Executive Director
The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl has named Sigma Chi alumnus Brant Ringler, a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, as its new executive director. He had spent the previous five years as chief marketing director for the Fort Worth, Texas-based bowl game which is televised by ESPN. Ringler joined the Armed Forces Bowl staff in November of 2004 after four seasons as vice president of marketing & sales for the Fort Worth Cats minor league baseball team.
July 20, 2009 Alpha Sigma Phi's Watson Finishes Second at British Open
After leading through most of the British Open, Tom Watson, an Alpha Sigma Phi from Stanford who had won five previous British Opens, lost a four round playoff but still earned a huge payday of $732,603 for his second place finish. His last British Open victory was in 1983 and, at age 59, was trying to become the oldest player to ever win a major tournament. Tying for fifth place at the Open was Sigma Chi's Luke Donald, who won $255,597. In another weekend tournament, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, a member of Sigma Pi, shot a final round 71 to place second at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Stateline, Nevada.
July 20, 2009 SAE Governor Plays Host to the National Governors Association Meeting
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Mississippi, has become chairman again of the Republican National Committee and, for the first time, the Republican Governors Association. He recently hosted the bi-partisan National Governors Association meeting in Biloxi, MS., which allowed him to show off how the Mississippi Gulf Coast has recovered under his leadership since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Over the next two years, Barbour will oversee his party's efforts in more than three dozen gubernatorial races.
July 15, 2009 Delt Wrestler Named Winner of the Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award
The Big Ten Conference recently selected Northwestern University two-time NCAA wrestling champion Jake Herbert, a member of Delta Tau Delta, as the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award as the top Big Ten male athlete in any sport. Following the conclusion of the wrestling season, he also won the Hodge Trophy as the most dominant collegiate performer and was named 2009 Big Ten Wrestler of the Year. In September, Herbert will be on the U.S. national team that will compete at the World championships in Denmark.
July 13, 2009 Two Greeks Have Second Place Finishes in Weekend Pro Golf Tourneys
At the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic in Silvis, IL, Brandt Snedeker of Kappa Alpha Order tied for second place honors and won $321,067. Placing eighth and winning $133,300 was Kevin Streelman of Delta Sigma Phi. Placing second on the Champions Tour's 3M Championship tournament was Andy Bean of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, who earned $154,000.
June 30, 2009 Pi Kappa Alpha's Nielsen Wins Dick's Sporting Goods Open
Golfer Lonnie Nielsen, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha from University of Iowa, shot a 9-under 63 in the final round to win $247,500 at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open at Endicott, NY. He finished the Champions Tour three-round tournament with a 21-under total of 195 strokes, the lowest winning score in the three year history of the event. It was Nielsen's second win since joining the Champions Tour in 2005, having previously won the 2007 Commodore Bank Championship.
June 16, 2009 SAE Head Coach Sets Record for Most NBA Titles
After leading his Los Angeles Lakers squad to another National Basketball Association championship, Phil Jackson, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at North Dakota, has now passed the late Red Auerbach of Tau Epsilon Phi as the alltime leading coach with 10 titles. Auerbach won nine championships while leading the Boston Celtics between 1957 and 1966.
June 12, 2009 Former AT&T CEO Becomes Chairman of the New GM
Ed Whitacre, a Texas Tech 1964 graduate and member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, has come out of retirement to take over as chairman of General Motors. He retired as CEO of AT&T in 2007 after 17 years and overseeing a dozen major deals valued at $287 million. When asked to explain why he's joining the high-profile fight to save GM, Whitacre said "GM is a great company and part of the fabric of this country. It shouldn't be allowed to go away. I'd like to help and I think I can. So I just decided to do it."
June 11, 2009 Kappa Alpha Psi Pro Football Star Featured in Sports Illustrated
The June 15th issue of Sports Illustrated has a four page feature story on one of the National Football League's top cornerbacks, Nnamdi Asomugha, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The story, entitled "A Name Worth Knowing" profiles one of the NFL's highest-paid players who has been involved with numerous civic causes, met with several former presidents and even addressed the United Nations.
June 10, 2009 Stanford Delt Pitcher is 10th Player Chosen in Baseball Draft
The Washington Nationals selected relief specialist Drew Storen, a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity at Stanford University, as the 10th selection in the first round of major league baseball's annual summer draft. ESPN draft specialist Keith Law predicted Storen would be with the big league club within a year. He led the Stanford team in wins, saves and earned run average on the way to All-Pacific-10 Conference first team honors.
June 9, 2009 Penske's Pending Purchase Could Change the Auto Industry
Known for his winning IndyCar race team and a big truck-leasing operation, Roger Pense, a member of Phi Gamma Delta at Lehigh University, could significantly change how cars are sold once his purchase of the Saturn brand from General Motors is finalized in October. Auto industry experts have called Penske' proposed plan "truly revolutionary" with Penske shopping globally for for lowcost automakers who can build to his specifications for "half the cost and in half the time".
June 3, 2009 Greeks Win Gold Medal From National Football Foundation
Former NFL quarterback Archie Manning (a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity) and current Chairman of he National Football Foundation, has announced that the co-recipients of the organization's highest award, the 2009 NFF Gold Medal, are Nike co-founders the late Bill Bowerman (former Oregon track coach and member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity) and Phil Knight (member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity). The two visionaries of the world's most recognizable athletic brand will be honored December 8th at the NFF's annual awards dinner in New York City, which wil also feature the new College Football Hall of Fame class.
May 20, 2009 Beta Lacrosse Star Named Defensive Player of the Year
The United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association has named Wesleyan University co-captain Spike Malangone, a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, as winner of the 2009 William C. Stiles Memorial Award as the Outstanding Defensive Player in NCAA Division III. He was also a first team All-American and will play in the annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game, along with Beta teammate Russ Follansbee, a third team All-American selection. Thirty Betas were members of the 15-4 Wesleyan team which played in the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III national tournament.
May 12, 2009 Kappa Alpha Psi Alumnus Chosen for College Football Divisional Hall of Fame
The National Football Foundation has announced its Divisional Hall of Fame class, which includes six players and coaches from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), Division II, Division III and the NAIA. Included in this year's class is wide receiver Rod Smith from Missouri Southern State, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He was a first team collegiate All-American and had a 13 year pro career with the Denver Broncos (1995-2007).
May 11, 2009 Two Beta Standouts Help Lead Cal-Irvine to NCAA Volleyball Title
Beta Theta Pi seniors Brent Asuka and Jon Steller helped lead 27-5 University of California-Irvine to the 2009 NCAA Division I volleyball championship. The team came from behind to win the final two sets over the University of Southern Califoria. Asuka and Steller were also regulars on Cal-Irvine's 2007 NCAA championship club.
May 8, 2009 Arizona Diamondbacks Pick Delt Alumnus as New Manager
The National League's Arizona Diamondbacks selected former big league catcher A.J. Hinch, a Delta Tau Delta alumnus from Stanford University, as their new field manager followed a 12-17 start. He joined the D-Backs front office in 2006 as director of player personnel and has overseen mnor league operations for the club.
May 4, 2009 SAE Alumnus Leads List of Highly Compensated CEOs
The May 4th edition of USA Today featured a cover story with their 2008 executive compensation report of the 10 most highly compensated CEOs. Leading the pack with $112.5 million was Aubrey McClendon of Chesapeake Energy, a 1981 graduate of Duke University and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
April 30, 2009 Three Greeks Named to NFF College Hall of Fame
The National Football Foundation has announced their 2009 class of NCAA Football Subdivision inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, IN. The two former college standout players selected from NIC member fraternities were end Ken Margerum, a Delta Upsilon at Stanford University, and former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Gino Torretta, a Pi Kappa Alpha from the University of Miami. One of just two head coaches chosen for induction was John Robinson, who had a 132-77-4 record at the University of Southern California and University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He is a Sigma Chi from the University of Oregon. Additional players from other divsions will be announced soon and all 2009 honorees will be inducted at the NFF's annual banquet in December.
April 27, 2009 Two NIC All-Americans Drafted by the NFL
Defensive lineman Aaron Maybin from Penn State was the Buffalo Bills' first round selection and 11t player chosen in the National Football League. The Bills drafted defensive back Nick Harris of Oklahoma in the fifth round. Both players are members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Defensive end Jason Williams, a Delta Upsilon at Western Illinois University who was on the NIC 2008 Honorable Mention list, was selected in the draft's third round by the Dallas Cowboys.
April 21, 2009 Sigma Alpha Epsilon Trainer Chosen for Racing Hall of Fame
Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning horse trainer Bob Baffert was elected to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY. A Sigma Alpha Epsilon initiate at the University of Arizona, he won Kentucky Derby and Preakness events with famous horses Silver Charm, Real Quiet and War Emblem. The induction ceremonies will take place on August 14th.
March 24, 2009 Sigma Nu Film Star's Career is Soaring
Just out on newstands is the March 27th issue of Entertainment Weekly with actor Paul Rudd on the cover, with a cutline reading "It's time to get to know the most lovable movie star on the planet!". The University of Kansas Sigma Nu's latest film, "I Love You, Man", opens in theaters today and follows on the heels of his key roles in "Anchorman", "The 40-Year Old Virgin", "Knocked Up", "Forgettin Sarah Marshall", "Over Her Dead Body" and "Role Models", which just came out on DVD.
March 12, 2009 New Pro Football League Starts Up With a Delta Chi Commissioner
The new United Football League plans to debut in October with teams in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando and New York. Named as commissioner of the new league was Michael Huyghue, a Delta Chi from Cornell, class of 1984, who has previously been a front office executive with the NFL Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars. He previously helped launch the NFL's World League in 1992.
March 5, 2009 Five Greeks Inducted Into Texas Sports Hall of Fame
On March 4th in Waco, TX, five Greeks (out of seven inductees) in the 2009 induction class went into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. The honorees were former NBA star Rolando Blackmon (Kappa Alpha Psi); former NFL defensive back and coach Bill Bradley (Lambda Chi Alpha); longtime college basketball coach Abe Lemons (Kappa Alpha Order); America's first pro soccer star Kyle Rote, Jr. (Delta Tau Delta); and All-American fullback Steve Worster (Sigma Phi Epsilon).
February 8, 2009 Seven Greeks Go to the Pro Bowl
Playing in the National Football League's Pro Bowl in Hawaii were seven Greeks from NIC member fraternities. The National Football Conference's team featured quarterback Drew Brees (Sigma Chi), quarterback Eli Manning (Sigma Nu), punter Jeff Feagles (Pi Kappa Alpha), special teamer Sean Morey (Theta Delta Chi) and deep snapper Zak DeOssie (Theta Delta Chi). Playing for the American Football Conference squad were wide receiver Brandon Marshall (Kappa Alpha Psi) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (Kappa Alpha Psi).
January 27, 2009 Greeks Involved at Super Bowl
USA Today's sports section features a good profile of Arizona Cardinals special teams standout Sean Morey, a member of Theta Delta Chi, the only player from an NIC fraternity on the team's roster for Sunday's Super Bowl. He will also be playing in the Pro Bowl following Sunday's game. The Cardinals coaching staff features running backs coach Maurice Carthon of Kappa Alpha Psi, defensive assistant Matt Raich of Sigma Nu, wide receiver coach Mike Miller of Phi Sigma Kappa, and strength & conditioning coach John Lott of Theta Chi. The only Pittsburgh Steelers player from an NIC group is starting offensive tackle Max Starks of Alpha Phi Alpha. Linebacker Donovan Woods of Kappa Alpha Psi played five games for Pittsburgh earlier in the season and is now on their practice squad. The Steelers coaching staff is led by head coach Mike Tomlin of Kappa Alpha Psi and running backs coach Kirby Wilson is a member of Iota Phi Theta. Doing play-by-play for the NBC telecast is Al Michaels of Sigma Nu.
January 27, 2009 Two Greeks Earn Best Actor Nominations
At yesterday's Academy Awards announcement, two Greeks were nominated for Oscars in the Best Actor category: Frank Langella of Alpha Chi Rho for his lead role in "Frost/Nixon" and Brad Pitt of Sigma Chi as the lead character in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". The awards ceremony takes place on February 22nd and will be seen on ABC-TV.
January 15, 2009 American Sportcasters Association Releases Top 50 List
The American Sportcasters Association released its list of alltime top 50 sportscasters as voted by its membership. Six Greeks from NIC fraternities were in the top 10 selections: #2 Mel Allen (Zeta Beta Tau); #4 Curt Gowdy (Alpha Tau Omega); #5 Howard Cosell (Pi Lambda Phi); #8 Keith Jackson (Alpha Tau Omega); #9 Al Michaels (Sigma Nu); and #10 Dick Enberg (Phi Sigma Kappa). Additional names of note included #16 Ernie Harwell (Sigma Alpha Epsilon); #17 Marv Albert (Sigma Alpha Mu); #22 Marty Glickman (Sigma Alpha Mu); #25 Chris Schenkel (Phi Sigma Kappa); #31 Joe Buck (Sigma Nu); #33 Bob Wolff (Sigma Nu); #37 Marty Brennaman (Kappa Alpha Order); and #40 Foster Hewitt (Beta Theta Pi).
January 8, 2009 Sigma Chi's Meyer Leads Gators to BCS National Championship
In his fouth season as head coach at University of Florida, Urban Meyer, a Sigma Chi from Cincinnati, took the Gators to their second BCS title in four years by beating Oklahoma, 24-14.
January 7, 2009 AP Names Sigma Chi Drew Brees as Offensive Player of the Year
New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, was named 2008 NFL Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. The Purdue Sigma Chi alumnus became only the second player in history to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season. He earned 22 votes in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sportswriters and broadcasters.
January 5, 2009 Chi Phi Alumnus Helps Launch Major League Baseball Network
The new 24 hour sports cable network for Major League Baseball went on the air January 1st and features Matt Vasgersian, a Chi Phi from the University of Southern California, as one of its lead announcers. A former play-by-play man for the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers, he has also done football telecasts, including tonight's Fiesta Bowl on Fox. One of the other major 24 hour cable sports networks, the NFL Network, has featured Pi Kappa Phi's Rich Eisen as lead host/announcer since going on the air November 4th of 2003.
December 19, 2008 USA Today Profiles Sigma Chi's Mike Holmgren
The cover story in the USA Today sports section featured longtime NFL head coach Mike Holmgren, a Sigma Chi alumnus from USC. After 10 seasons as Seattle Seahawks head coach, he is stepping down as head coach. Previously, he took the Green Bay Packers to Super Bowl appearances in 1996 and 1997 before joining the Seahawks as general manager/head coach. Taking over as head coach next season is current assistant head coach Jim Mora, Jr., a Lambda Chi Alpha from the University of Washington.
December 9, 2008 Sigma Chi Alumnus Chosen for Baseball Hall of Fame
Former Yankees and Indians second baseman Joe "Flash" Gordon was chosen by the Veterans Committee for induction into the Hall of Fame next summer. Initiated into Sigma Chi at the University of Oregon, Gordon, who passed away in 1978, was a nine-time All-Star, played on five world championship clubs and was a major league manager for six seasons.
December 4, 2008 Delt Alumnus Named to President-Elect's Cabinet
President-elect Barack Obama has selected New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson to be his secretary of commerce when the new administration takes over. The Delta Tau Delta alumnus from Tufts University previously served as energy secretary and United Nations ambassador under President Clinton.
November 25, 2008 Wal-Mart Selects Delta Sigma Phi Alumnus as New President/CEO
The Wal-Mart board of directors has elected Mike Duke of Delta Sigma Phi as President/CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., effective February 1st of next year. He also joined the board of directors on November 21st. The Georgia Tech 1968 graduate has served as Vice Chairman, leading Wal-Mart International since 2005 as the company has become one of the most successful global retailers. The company's original founder, the late Sam Walton, was a member of Beta Theta Pi.
November 18, 2008 Phi Sigma Kappa's Cook Spotlighted in USA Today
The Life section's cover story is about rock singer David Cook, a member of Phi Kappa Sigma at Central Missouri, who shot to fame by winning the latest "American Idol" competition. Today marked the arrival of his first self-titled compact disc featuring 12 songs, of which he wrote or co-wrote 10. He also appeared on the November 1st edition of "Saturday Night Live". The 25-year old Blue Springs, MO native will continue with TV appearances and concerts to promote the new CD. Check him out at www.davidcookofficial.com.
November 13, 2008 Lambda Chi's Chesney is CMA Entertainer of the Year Again
At the annual Country Music Association awards show on ABC-TV, Kenny Chesney of Lambda Chi Alpha was named Entertainer of the Year for the fourth straight year. He also received nominations in the male vocalist, single, album, musical event and video categories.
November 12, 2008 Zeta Psi's Maddon Named AL Manager of the Year
After leading his Tampa Bay Rays to 97 wins and a World Series berth, Joe Maddon, a member of Zeta Psi at Lafayette College, was a near-unanimous choice as the American League's Manager of the Year in his second season at the helm. He won 27 of the 28 first place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
November 11, 2008 Kappa Alpha Psi Football Star is a Rhodes Finalist
Florida State safety Myron Rolle, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, is a top defensive star for the Seminoles and a candidate for a Rhodes Scholarship. On November 22nd, he will go through Rhodes interviews during the day in Birmingham, AL, then be flown on a private jet or charter to College Park, MD for the FSU-Maryland showdown at 7:45 PM that night. Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden (a member of Pi Kappa Alpha) gave Rolle the chance to attend the interviews and the NCAA has approved the special flight arrangement.
November 10, 2008 Beta Golfer Ties for Third at PGA Tour Event
Tying for third at the PGA Tour's Children's Miracle Network Classic was Steve Marino, a Beta Theta Pi alumnus from the University of Virginia. His third-place tie, which was 20 strokes below par, earned him $266,000.
November 3, 2008 SAE's Andy Bean Wins Champions Tour Event
Winning the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, CA by nine strokes was Andy Bean, an SAE from the University of Florida. His four round total of 268 (two 66's, two 68's) earned him first place winnings of $442,000.
October 13, 2008 Pi Kappa Alpha Alumnus Takes the Helm at Clemson
In one of the first major coaching changes of the 2008 college football season, Dabo Swinney has been elevated from assistant head coach to interim head coach at Clemson University. He is now in his sixth season on the Clemson staff and joined Pi Kappa Alpha at Alabama while playing wide receiver.
October 4, 2008 New Football Film has Strong Greek Ties
Opening in theaters nationwide on October 10th is "The Express", an uplifting, inspirational movie about the life of the late Ernie Davis, the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner and member of Sigma Alpha Mu at Syracuse University. Co-starring in the film is Clancy Brown, a Northwestern Sigma Chi, and Ernie's college head coach, Kappa Alpha Order Hall of Famer Ben Schwartzwalder is a dominate figure in the film (and played by Dennis Quad). The film is based on 1999 book, Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express, written by Robert Gallagher, a Syracuse Delta Tau Delta. A new updated edition (titled The Express) is currently in bookstores. October 3, 2008 Sigma Nu Country Rock Band Gets National Exposure
Going on tour to promote their first nationally-released CD, "Jet Black & Jealous", is the Eli Young Band, whose four members have been playing together since joining Sigma Nu at the University of North Texas in the late 1990's. The group features lead singer-guitarist Mike Eli; guitarist James Young, bassist Jon Jones and drummer Chris Thompson. One of the CD tracks was co-written by Nashville songwriter George Ducas, a Sigma Nu from Vanderbilt.
October 1, 2008 Zeta Psi's Joe Maddon Featured in Sports Illustrated
Leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 95 win season and a division title was Joe Maddon, who joined Zeta Psi at Lafayette College. The six page story,. titled "Joe Maddon Has a Vision", is in the October 6th issue of Sports Illustrated and discusses how the 54-year old manager turned the team around in his second season. Also contributing to the Rays' success is pitching coach Jim Hickey, a member of Phi Sigma Kappa.
September 24, 2008 Recent Book Celebrates 1960's Greek Singing Duo
Best-selling author Bob Greene has written a wonderful memoir about the years he spent traveling and performing with "Jan and Dean", the pop singing duo who had such big hits as "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena", "Surf City", "Ride the Wild Surf", "Deadman's Curve' and "Honolulu Lulu", among others. Lifelong friends Jan Berry, a Phi Gamma Delta from UCLA, and Dean Torrence, a Phi Sigma Kappa from USC, continued doing oldies tours and concerts until Berry's death in 2004. Greene's book highlights summer tours he did with the group in the 1990's as a guest guitarist and backup singer. When We Get to Surf City was published by St. Martin's Press several months ago and is available nationwide.
September 6, 2008 Pat Riley of Sigma Nu Joins Basketball Hall of Fame
The new induction class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame included Sigma Nu's Pat Riley, who achieved success as a player at Kentucky and in the National Basketball Association. He also has had a lengthy career as an NBA head coach, winning championships for the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat.

Today's sports section of USA Today featured a lengthy profile of head coach Rick Neuheisel, who joined the Sigma Nu chapter while in school at UCLA. After being away from the college game since 2002, he is pleased to be at his alma mater again. He had a 66-30 record at Colorado (1995-98) and Washington (1999-2002).

Eighteen year veteran pitcher Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees was the cover story in today's edition. The Stanford graduate has been one of the season's top hurlers with a 16-7 record and is shooting for his first 20 win season, which will enhance his chances of being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In one of the last events of the Beijing Olympics, the U.S. men's water polo team took the Silver Medal. Key players were Kappa Alpha Order alumni Tony Azevedo, Peter Hudnut and Peter Varellas, all from Stanford University. The water polo team's head coach was Terry Schroeder, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a two-time Silver Medal winner as a player in 1984 and 1988.
August 22, 2008 KA's Sam Wyche Profiled in USA Today
Today's edition featured a lengthy profile and three photos of former NFL head coach and player Sam Wyche, a member of Kappa Alpha Order from Furman, who is now the only former NFL head coach now working in the high school coaching ranks. He last coached for the Buffalo Bills in 2005 and was a broadcast commentator until 1999. He's the Pickens, SC Meals on Wheels chairman, is running for the Pickens County council and runs his 28-acre farm.

Phillip Dallhausser, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, and his playing partner, Todd Rogers, took first place honors in the men's two-man beach volleyball competition in Beijing, China. He is Lambda Chi's first medalist in 20 years.

Winning his first Champions Tour event in nearly two years was Andy Bean of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He won $255,000 after a one stroke victory at the Region's Charity Classic in Hoover, Alabama. Tying for fifth place was Lonnie Nielsen of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Named as ACM Entertainer of the Year for the fourth straight year at the annual awards show in Las Vegas was Kenny Chesney of Lambda Chi Alpha. Winning the New Male Vocalist award was Jack Ingram of Alpha Tau Omega. The vocal talents of Chesney, Tracy Lawrence of Sigma Pi and Tim McGraw of Pi Kappa Alpha combined on Find Out Who Your Friends Are, which took Vocal Event of the Year honors.
April 8, 2008 Greeks Earn Hall of Fame Honors During Final Four Weekend
During college basketball's Final Four championship weekend in San Antonio, three Greeks were honored. Longtime NBA player and coach Pat Riley of Sigma Nu was named to the 2008 class of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, MO, also announced its 2008 class, which includes two Kappa Alpha Psi members: 1988 Player of the Year Danny Manning and longtime head coach Nolan Richardson.
April 3, 2008 Phi Gam Morgan Spurlock Wins Fred Rogers Integrity Award
Film director, writer and actor Morgan Spurlock, a member of Phi Gamma Delta at NYU, received the Fred Rogers Award, named in honor of the host of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, to recognize his efforts to protect children from harmful marketing. Spurlock directed and starred in the Oscar-nominated "Super Size Me" in 2004 and produced the 2007 film "What Would Jesus Buy", a look at the commercialization of Christmas and its effect on children. The award was presented by The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

Northwestern University's Dustin Fox, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, won the heavyweight championship at the NCAA Division I meet. He posted a 29-1 record for the season and is Northwestern's first NCAA heavyweight champ since 1932.
March 24, 2008 Beta Head Coach Leads Team to NCAA Division III Title
Mark Edwards, a member of Beta Theta Pi, led his 25-6 Washington University in St. Louis team to its first-ever NCAA Division III basketball championship. The top United States javelin contender at the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Breaux Greer of Pi Kappa Alpha, is profiled in the March 10th issue of ESPN The Magazine. The five page feature, entitled "Rogue Spear", includes five color photos of the eccentric 31-year-old from Louisiana-Monroe who has won the U.S. javelin championship every year this century.

Sigma Nu's Eli Manning Wins Super Bowl XLII MVP Award
In leading the New York Giants to an upset 17-14 win over the New England Patriots, Giants quarterback Eli Manning became the first Sigma Nu to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Also playing for New York were the oldest man to play in a Super Bowl, punter Jeff Feagles of Pi Kappa Alpha, and lineback Zak DeOssie (Theta Delta Chi). Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gibride is a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. Part of the Giants team but on Injured Reserve all season were fullback Jim Finn (Sigma Chi) and deep snapper Ryan Kuehl (Beta Theta Pi). Greeks with the New England team were head coach Bill Belichick (Chi Psi) and Andre Tippett (Kappa Alpha Psi), who is director of football development and promotions for community affairs. Doing TV play-by-play on the Fox Network was Joe Buck of Sigma Nu. On Saturday before the big game, longtime NFL linebacking star Tippett was the only Greek named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame class for 2008.

Longtime pro Jerry Pate, a member of Phi Gamma Delta, won the Champion Tour's Turtle Bay Championship for his first victory in 39 starts, shooting a 3 under par 211 in the three round event. In the first Nationwide Tour of the year, Delta Tau Delta's Scott Dunlap won his first tour event since 2004, shooting a 3 under four round total of 277, including a first round 65, at the Panama Movistar Championship.

December 12, 2007 Archie Manning Named National Football Foundation Chairman
Sigma Nu's Archie Manning, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and a longtime NFL quarterback, has become the National Football Foundation's sixth chairman since it's founding in 1947. He has served on the NFF board since 1993 and is the father of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who is also a Sigma Nu.
December 9, 2007 Four Greeks Receive Grammy Nominations
Four alumni of NIC member fraternities received nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science. Receiving nominations were Dierks Bentley of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (four), Tim McGraw of Pi Kappa Alpha (four), Willie Nelson of Tau Kappa Epsilon (one) and Stephen Sondheim of Beta Theta Pi (two). The 50th annual Grammy Awards show will be telecast from Los Angeles on February 8th.
December 7, 2007 Sigma Pi's Frank Broyles Receives Award
University of Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles, who retires at the end of this month, was presented the National College Football Awards Association Contribution to College Football Award. A member of Sigma Pi, he served as Razorbacks head coach from 1958 through 1976 before becoming athletic director.

Former Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, a member of Theta Delta Chi, was one of five men selected by the Baseball Hall of Fame's veterans committee for summer 2008 induction into the Hall. November 5, 2007 Delta Upsilon's Michael Eisner Has Big Plans for Topps
Today's USA Today newspaper featured some interesting plans from former Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner, a Delta Upsilon from Denison, who oversees the consortium that recently purchased longtime sports cards leader Topps. He envisions Topps creating a movie, TV, Internet and publishing franchise around Bazooka Joe, the eye-patch-wearing kid introduced in 1953 on bubble gum card packs. The company will continue producing sports and entertainment cards, as it has since 1952. Helping Topps become the baseball card leader were Joel Shorin (president from 1963-86) and Sy Berger, who developed the first "modern baseball card" in 1952 and spent 50 years at Topps. Both Shorin (who passed away in 1988) and Berger were members of Sigma Alpha Mu at Bucknell.

After spending the 2007 season as a broadcaster, Joe Girardi of Alpha Tau Omega has returned to the dugout as Yankees manager. He previously served as a bench coach for the Yankees in 2005 and was 2006 National League Manager of the Year while with the Florida Marlins.

September 5, 2007 Pi Kappa Alpha Javelin Thrower Places Third at World Meet
Breaux Greer, a Pike who was on the 2004 US Olympic team, won a Bronze Medal in the javelin (just under 300 feet) at the World Track & Field Championships at Osaka, Japan in early September. He was the first American to place in the World meet javelin competition since 1983 and is the top US candidate for the 2008 Olympic Games.

A panel of baseball experts and fans selected the nine best-fielding players in baseball history and Wes Parker of Sigma Chi got the nod at first base. The six-time Gold Glove winner played nine seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and retired after the 1972 season.
August 3, 2007 Delt War Hero's Book Reaches Number One on Best Seller List
New book Lone Survivor , written by Sam Houston State University graduate Marcus Luttrell, a member of Delta Tau Delta, has reached the number one spot on the New York Times ' non-fiction best seller list. The book is the story of Navy SEALs team leader Luttrell, the lone survivor of Operation Redwing in June of 2005 in northern Afghanistan, and his team. As a result of his heroism, he was awarded the Navy Cross in 2006 by President Bush.
July 30, 2007 Sigma Chi's Denny Matthews Inducted Into Baseball Hall of Fame
Longtime play-by-play broadcaster Denny Matthews, a member of Sigma Chi from Illinois Wesleyan, received the Ford C. Frick Award and was inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame on June 29th. He is in his 39th year with the Kansas City Royals.
July 24, 2007 Delt Drew Carey to Replace Sigma Nu Legend Bob Barker
TV host/comedian Drew Carey of Delta Tau Delta confirmed to Sigma Chi's David Letterman that he had just been confirmed as the man to replace Sigma Nu's Bob Barker on the "Price Is Right" show. On August 10th, Carey hosts a new CBS nighttime game show "The Power of 10". Barker retired after 35 years and 6,586 "Price Is Right" shows.
July 2, 2007 Pi Kappa Alpha Golfer Wins His First Champions Tour Event
After 91 starts on the Champions Tour without a victory, Pike Lonnie Nielsen won the Commerce Bank Championship in East Meadow, NJ. He had his biggest professional payday with scores of 66-64-69 for a two stroke win over the second place finisher. Bob Gilder of Sigma Alpha Epsilon finished fourth at the tournament.

The 61st annual Tony Awards in New York saw three Greeks honored for their work on the Broadway stage. Winning seven Tonys was Best Play The Coast of Utopia , which earned a Best Direction of a Play Tony for Jack O'Brien of Delta Tau Delta and a Best Featured Actor in a Play Tony for Billy Crudup of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Named as Best Actor in a Play was Frank Langella of Alpha Chi Rho for his lead role in Nixon/Frost .
June 9, 2007 Pi Kappa Alpha's Pletcher Wins First Triple Crown Race
Veteran trainer Todd Pletcher of Pi Kappa Alpha ended a long drought at Triple Crown events when his horse, Rags to Riches, came through to win the Belmont Stakes. His horse, Rags to Riches, outdueled Preakness winner Curlin in the stretch to become the first filly to win the Belmont since 1905.

March 19, 2007 Delt Named Swimmer of the Meet at NCAA Division III Championships
Eric Dunn of Delta Tau Delta led Kenyon College to its 28th consecutive NCAA Division III title and was named Swimmer of the Meet. He won his second straight 1650 yard freestyle event and took first place crowns in the 400 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
March 18, 2007 Tom Purtzer of SAE Wins AT&T Champions Classic
Winning his first PGA Champions Tour event of 2007 was Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Tom Purtzer, who had a birdie on the fourth hole of sudden death, the longest playoff in the 18 year history of the Champions Tour. Andy Bean of SAE finished fourth and Phi Gamma Delta's Hale Irwin placed fifth.
March 17, 2007 Delt Wrestler Wins Championship at NCAA Meet
Winning the 184 pound championship at the NCAA Division I wrestling meet was Delta Tau Delta junior Jake Herbert of Northwestern University, who was undefeated with a 32-0 record. He was named NCAA Co-Wrestler of the Year by BigElevenWrestling.net.
February 19, 2007 Watson of Alpha Sigma Phi Wins Champions Tour Event
Winning the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in Lutz, FL was Tom Watson of Alpha Sigma Phi. It was the Golf Hall of Famer's first-ever professional win in the state of Florida . Tying for second at the tournament was Andy Bean of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
February 15, 2007 Two Pi Kappa Alpha Undergraduates Honored by USA Today
Named to USA Today's 18th annual All-USA College Academic first team of 20 students were two members of Pi Kappa Alpha: Frank Leibfarth of University of South Dakota and Joe O'Shea of Florida State University. Leibfarth is the first team place kicker on our NIC All-Fraternity All-American team for Divisions II and III. O'Shea was recently named student body president at FSU.

Playing for the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts was defensive tackle Anthony McFarland (Kappa Alpha Psi). On the Colts sideline were offensive coordinator Tom Moore (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) and offensive line coach Howard Mudd (Delta Tau Delta) while Bob Terpening (Tau Kappa Epsilon) is the team's Executive Vice President. Members of the Chicago Bears team were deep snapper Patrick Mannelly (Alpha Tau Omega), quarterback Brian Griese (Phi Gamma Delta), quarterback Kyle Orton (Pi Kappa Alpha) and defensive assistant Lloyd Lee (Beta Theta Pi). Doing the game color commentary for CBS-TV was Phil Simms (Tau Kappa Epsilon).
February 2, 2007 Phi Gamma Delta's Wehrli Chosen for Pro Football Hall of Fame
Defensive back Roger Wehrli of Phi Gamma Delta was named to the 2007 induction class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played 14 seasons (1969-82) for the St. Louis Cardinals and will be officially inducted August 5th in Canton, OH.
January 23, 2007 Kappa Alpha Psi's Tomlin Named Steelers Head Coach
The Pittsburgh Steelers named Mike Tomlin as their new head coach on January 22nd. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi from William & Mary and had been defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings before becoming the 16th head coach in Steelers franchise history.
January 22, 2007 Phi Gam Hale Irwin Wins MasterCard Championship
One of the top players on the Champions Tour, Hale Irwin, won the season-opening MasterCard Championship in Hawaii. Coming off his first winless season in 12 years, the Colorado Phi Gamma Delta alumnus had a 23-under total to become the sixth-oldest player to win on the senior tour.

Sigma Chi Wins Battle of Greek Coaches for #1 Ranking
University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer of Sigma Chi led his Gators squad to a big win over the Ohio State squad of Alpha Tau Omega's Jim Tressel in the season-ending BCS championship contest. Florida finished atop the Associated Press Top 25 after its convincing 41-14 victory over the Buckeyes. Ohio State ranked second and the USC Trojans, led by Pete Carroll (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) finished in fourth place.

December 22, 2006 "We Are Marshall" Features Greek Involvement
The new film "We Are Marshall", which focuses on the 1970 tragic football team plane crash, has a heavy Greek involvement. The two main stars are Matthew McConaughey (Delta Tau Delta) as new 1971 head coach Jack Lengyel and Matthew Fox (Phi Gamma Delta), who plays assistant coach William "Red" Dawson (Pi Kappa Alpha). Playing McConaughey's wife is Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Alpha Phi). Former Georgia record-setting kicker Billy Bennett (Kappa Alpha Order) plays Marshall kicker Blake Smith (Sigma Phi Epsilon). An actor portrays Bobby Bowden (Pi Kappa Alpha), who was head coach at West Virginia and helped the Marshall coaching staff following the crash. Early game footage features quarterback Ted Shoebridge, who was one of five Pi Kappa Alpha players who died in the crash.

Nominees for the 64th Golden Globe Awards include three Greeks. In the motion picture category, Delta Tau Delta's Will Ferrell received a Best Actor, Musical/Comedy for the film "Stranger Than Fiction". Sigma Chi's Brad Pitt received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in " Babel ". In the television category, Phi Kappa Psi's Zach Braff earned a Best Actor, Comedy/Musical Series for his performance in "Scrubs".

Kappa Alpha Psi Hall of Famer Profiled in USA Today
Profiled on the front page of USA Today's sports section was Bill Willis of Kappa Alpha Psi , who helped break the NFL's color barrier in 1946 when he signed with the Cleveland Browns. He was the first African-American to earn All-American honors at Ohio State and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Today, at the age of 85, he is a patriarch to today's African-American players.

SAE's Andy Bean Wins Greater Hickory Classic
Winning his first PGA Tour-sanctioned event since 1986 was Andy Bean of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In winning his first Champions Tour event and biggest career payday, he won a one hole playoff to finish with a 15-under 201 total. Tying for fifth at the Greater Hickory Classic was SAE's Tom Purtzert . Tying for sixth place at the PGA Tour's American Express Championships was Luke Donald of Sigma Chi.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Bob Gilder Wins Champions Tour Event
Winning the Constellation Energy Classic was SAE's Bob Gilder, who won his first Champions tournament since 2003. Tying for second was Don Pooley of Sigma Nu. Other high finishers were Tom Watson of Alpha Sigma Phi (T-6); Tom Purtzer of SAE (T-7); and Bruce Summerhays of Sigma Chi (T-10). Placing fourth at the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open was Scott Dunlap of Delta Tau Delta.

Five Greeks Are Charter Members of New Basketball Hall of Fame
The new National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City , MO has named its inaugural class of five men who will be inducted on November 19th. They are Dr. James Naismith (Sigma Phi Epsilon), Oscar Robertson (Kappa Alpha Psi ), Bill Russell (Kappa Alpha Psi ), Dean Smith (Phi Gamma Delta) and John Wooden (Beta Theta Pi). This new HOF will be housed in the new Sprint Center being built in downtown Kansas City .

Zeta Psi's Sullivan Joins Bush Team
Kevin Sullivan, a member of Zeta Psi at Purdue University , has become the new White House communications director for President Bush. Since 2000, he has been a vice president of communications for both NBC Sports and NBC Universal. Sullivan previously was with the NBA Dallas Mavericks for 18 years as public relations director and vice president of communications.

In the recent major league baseball draft, the Colorado Rockies selected Stanford pitcher Greg Reynolds, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, as the second player chosen. He is still pitching in the NCAA playoffs as Stanford has reached the Super 8 regional playoffs.

Sigma Tau Gamma's Gil Morgan Wins Champions Tour Event
Gil Morgan, a member of Sigma Tau Gamma, rallied from two strokes down on the final two holes to win the Allianz Championship in West Des Moines , Iowa . His final round score of 67 allowed him to finish at 16-under, breaking the tournament record by two strokes. Morgan has played on the PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour and Champions Tour since 1973.

Phi Kappa Tau's Paul Newman Profiled on USA Today's Front Page
Paul Newman of Phi Kappa Tau has been in Monterrey,Mexico this week for the Tecate Grand Prix as a racing team co-owner. Still consumed at age 81 with a passion for racing, he will be in Charlotte, North Carolina over the weekend for the premiere of "Cars", a new Disney animated film, which includes his voice narration, and for the Sunday night Coca-Cola 600.

Lambda Chi Alpha's Kenny Chesney was named Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards show in Las Vegas . College Football Hall of Fame Picks Three Greeks
The NCAA Division I-A Hall of Fame class for 2006 includes Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden (Pi Kappa Alpha); Penn State head coach Joe Paterno (Delta Kappa Epsilon); and Stanford linebacker Jeff Siemon (Delta Tau Delta). They will be inducted on December 5th at the National Football Foundation annual dinner in New York , with enshrinement to follow in 2007 at the Hall in South Bend , IN.

Among the 10 charter members of the new College Baseball Hall of Fame are three former great college coaches: Rod Dedeaux (Delta Chi) of USC; Ron Fraser (Theta Chi) of Miami ; and Bobby Winkles (Sigma Chi) of Arizona State . The induction ceremony will take place in Lubbock , TX . on July 4th. The NCAA recently announced its 50th Anniversary Division II Elite Eight Basketball Team, spotlighting the greatest players who have played in the championship final two rounds. Among the ten players selected were center Phil Jackson of  North Dakota (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) and forward George Tinsley of Kentucky Wesleyan (Sigma Alpha Mu ).

Profiled in USA TODAY's "Money" section is Kappa Alpha Psi's Robert Louis Johnson, who became the nation's first African-American billionaire when he sold the Black Entertainment Television empire to Viacom in 2000. As chairman of RLJ Cos., he is now the biggest black hotelier in the country and has ventured into other areas, such as professional sports (owner of the Charlotte NBA team), restaurants, private equity funds and banking.

Beta Alumnus Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame
Beta Theta Pi's Dave Gavitt was the only Greek chosen for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September. A former head coach at Providence College, he has also been chairman of NCAA Division's I's basketball committee; president of USA Basketball; Big East Conference commissioner; and chairman of the Hall of Fame's board of directors.

Already wearing two hats as GM's CEO and chairman of the board of directors, he has assigned himself to fix the company's money-losing North American operations as well.

Sigma Chi Golfer Wins PGA Honda Classic
Winning his first PGA Tour event since 2002 was Luke Donald of Sigma Chi, who won the PGA Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens , FL. The 1999 NCAA champion from Northwestern had to sit out two days of rain before the final round could be played. A birdie on the 18th hole clinched his big victory.

Phi Gam Golfer Wins First Pro Tournament Since 1982
Phi Gamma Delta's Jerry Pate won the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, a Champions Tour event, his first professional victory since winning The Players Championship since 1982. From 1983 through 2003, he had surgery four times while playing in both PGA Tour and Champions Tour events. Jerry has also been a succesful color analyst for golf coverage on CBS, ABC and the BBC when injuries kept him from playing.

Two Greeks are nominated for major awards at the upcoming Academy Awards presentation on March 5th. Nominated for Best Director is Steven Spielberg of Theta Chi for the film " Munich ". Nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category for " Syriana " is Stephen Gaghan of Delta Tau Delta, who also directed the film. Both are former Oscar winners. Two new NFL Greek head coaches
Two of the National Football League's newly-appointed first time head coaches are Greeks. The New York Jets selected Chi Psi's Eric Mangini as their new head coach. He had been defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Now serving as head coach of the New Orleans Saints is former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton, a member of Sigma Chi.
