IFC Academy '09
January 24, 2009
The fraternal movement has evolved into more than our founders could have dreamed and to our credit we still find men asking more of their organization. As an IFC you have the responsibility of showing the college man that he belongs in a fraternity. As an IFC you have the responsibility of representing what is best about the fraternal system on your campus. Academy 2009 is one day that will help you refocus your commitment and re-engage your council.
Academy 2009 will convene as one large group and then break into separate educational tracks.
The Public Relations / Marketing track will focus on issues in a way that speaks to how we are publicizing the fraternal experience to potential fraternity members. PR/M is the place for Recruitment, community relations, education, philanthropy, and external affairs officers. The Executive Track will focus on the role of the presiding officer in the council and how he can be a better steward of the office.
Be assured, any officer will bring something tangible home from Academy.

The timing of the Academy is designed to reach the most people at the beginning of their terms. Our research indicates that 65% of councils elect officers in the fall term. The late January date was selected based on feedback from past graduates. They say the timing allows the council to return to campus and have enough time to start the conversations and implement changes.
Since we have decided to host only one Academy this year, we selected Indianapolis to serve as host. Indianapolis is easily accessed for campuses close enough to drive in and is served by a terrific, reasonably priced International Airport .
Indianapolis will allow us to use the resources of the many Inter/National Headquarters and staff that are located here. We intend to include many executive directors in our programming. This may be the first time that many of the officers have the opportunity to visit their headquarters and talk with the staff. Councils could arrange to visit headquarters on either Friday or Sunday.
The Indianapolis Downtown Hilton Hotel has been selected to be our host hotel. The Hilton has a number of unique offerings, including a deluxe room combination that sleeps six comfortably.
While councils are at the Academy, your attention and focus will be fully on the important issues facing your community. However, the downtown location offers you the opportunity to explore within walking distance of the hotel some of the unique characteristics of our great city, such as the NCAA Hall of Champions, Circle Center , and other cultural outlets.

Professional Setting and Program top of page
Our curriculum is designed by professional staff from the North-American Interfraternity Conference and is communicated through fraternity executives, former inter/national presidents, attorneys, and other leaders in the fraternal world.
Dress for the Academy will be professional. In addition, during the academy, participants are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the academy and remain substance free. The programs will be facilitated by NIC professional staff and volunteers, attorneys, fraternity executives, and campus professionals.
Registration fee will remain at only $125 per participant. This includes 2 meals, and all materials while at Academy. Each institution is responsible for travel expenses and lodging.
Academy 2009 will take place at the Hilton in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana on January 24, 2009. We have secured a very special rate of $116 per night at the host hotel. There are rooms available that sleep 6 comfortably.
The Hilton has multiple suites which sleep 6 and have a conference table and work area that would set up perfectly for an officer retreat while on site. When making reservations with the Hilton be sure to mention you would like the King Suite. These rooms carry a very nominal increase in expense.
NIC Staff would love to be a part of your retreat. Let us know early!
